Connectivity
Foreign travellers generally board connecting flights to Penang from two main airports operating in Sepang – KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport) and KLIA2 (Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2), and another in the city – the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang. Domestic flights are also widely available for visitors to fly to Penang from other states within Malaysia; visitors can easily fly in from Kedah (Langkawi), Johor (Johor Bahru), Sabah (Kota Kinabalu), Kelantan (Kota Bharu), and Sarawak (Kuching).
The Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas is about to undergo an expansion. The expansion includes four phases and is expected to be completed in about 48 to 60 months. At present, the expansion project is on hold, pending the finalisation of the National Airport Strategic Plan (NASP). The NASP study on airport development is expected to be completed in 2023, in line with the National Transport Policy. The project is expected to increase passenger capacity from 6.5 million to 25 million a year.
